Police: August 2013 homicides down, continue to fight violent crime

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Labor Day weekend was a violent one, but overall, Chicago police say crime and murders are down.

Police say that shootings are down 22 percent and murders are down 23 percent, this year compared to last.

This weekend, there were 5 murders in Chicago in the Englewood, Old Town, Bridgeport, Morgan Park and West Pullman neighborhoods.

But police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Tuesday that progress is being made combating gun violence – progress, but not success, because even one murder is one too many.

He says there have been more than 100 fewer homicides over the last 11 months compared to the same period last year and nearly 500 fewer shooting victims.

On Tuesday the department also released its latest statistics on seized weapons. According to police, officers have seized more than 4,800 illegal firearms in 2013 -- more than any department in the United States.
