DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Local union workers and their families filled the streets of downtown Detroit Monday in a sign of solidarity with the men and women who helped pave the way. The city's annual Labor Day parade is a tradition that dates back more than 100 years.

Thousands of workers pounded the pavement in downtown Detroit. They marched down Michigan Ave. in celebration of Labor Day, the March on Washington's 50th anniversary still fresh in their minds. From cops to carpenters, college professors to roofers, union members from all walks of life packed the streets to honor the workers of yesteryear.

"It's great to be out with all the folks from my unit as a UAW Local 412 worker," said Steve Fox. "We've got unions from all over southeast Michigan."

Jobs, justice and peace, marchers in this year's parade say civil rights and economic justice are inseparable. They say that was Martin Luther King, Jr's dream and it has yet to be fully realized. They say if you're enjoyed Labor Day holiday off you have labor unions of old to thank for it.
