Rich Eisen: I Did The Right Thing As A Host

Rich Eisen loves his job. He loves talking NFL football, loves talking to celebrities about NFL football, and loves hosting his new special "The Rich Eisen Kickoff Special", which airs Tuesday night on the NFL network. Rich talked to Steve and Maria about why he thinks he has the best job in the world.

"I just love having folks come and talk football and they don't even need to know football to come on the show...somebody sitting at home who is as big of a Patriots fan as Matt Damon can agree with him 'Oh yeah, I feel the same way about Wes Welker, about the Patriots'."

Rich sits down with Damon, Kevin Costner, and Larry David. Rich says it doesn't get any better than that.

"That's part of what I love about this show. I'm as much of a fan of these guys or ladies who come on the show...Larry, just, I realized as a host that he was on a roll and your job is to shut up...it's really just laugh out loud funny."

So what isn't fun for Rich? How about one of the most popular quarterbacks in the country?

"I mentally check out when people mention Tim Tegow...Tebow now...see I mentally checked out on even saying his name."

Aside from the fact thay many don't believe Tebow's a good enough quarterback for the NFL, Rich has another theory as to why teams aren't willing to sign him.

"Many teams do not want to have him on their team as the backup and have the fan base call for his name every single time a quarterback that they believe should be their starter throws an errant pass or doesn't get a first down...and that may be part of the reason why teams don't turn to him as a backup quarterback."

  • Eisen was first a staff writer for the Staten Island Advance from 1990–1993, and the Chicago Tribune in 1993 and 1994. He was then a sports anchor and reporter at KRCR-TV in Redding, California from 1994 to 1996, and also worked in television as the Medill News Service's Washington correspondent (1994).
  • Among Eisen's notable achievements while at ESPN, was breaking the news of St. Louis slugger Mark McGwire's retirement from baseball in 2001 on SportsCenter. Days later, he sat down with McGwire for an exclusive interview elaborating on the decision.
  • Eisen is the host of the TNT original reality series, The Great Escape, which debuted on June 24, 2012.
