Pregnancy Myths: Are they fact or fiction?

Expectant mothers always get a bit of advice from friends and relatives, but how much of what they hear is fact and how much is fiction?

Video: We're dispelling some of the biggest myths with Banner Good Samaritan Hospital's Dr. Candice Wood.

You can tell the gender of the fetus by the heart beat and the way you are carrying the fetus
MYTH!

If you have a huge appetite, you are having a boy!
FACT!

Sleeping on your back can hurt the baby
MYTH!

You can tangle the umbilical cord by raising your hands above your head
MYTH!

If you are experiencing heartburn that means you will have a hairy baby!
FACT!

You should avoid seafood during pregnancy
MYTH!

No more than 12 oz/week
Albacore "white" tuna
    - 6 oz/week
Avoid shark, swordfish,
King mackerel, tilefish

You have to eat for two
MYTH!
Only 300 extra calories (2nd &3rd)
½ sandwich, ¼ cup dried fruit or nuts

You should avoid eating deli meats
Conditional
Listeria & increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, or fetal illness
    -Unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses
    -Refrigerated smoked seafood, hot dogs and deli meats
Salmonella & undercooked eggs

Caffeine intake should be limited
FACT!
    >200 mg caffeine/day
    12 oz coffee or 30 oz of tea
    Double risk of SAB

Pregnant women should avoid exposure to microwave ovens and computers
MYTH!
               No science to prove microwaves harm fetus
               LCD screen & lack of cathode ray tube
               However avoid long hours on keyboard

Air travel involving high altitudes is concerning in causing pre term labor
MYTH!

Avoid changing your cat's litter box during pregnancy
FACT!
               Toxoplasma found in soil
               Raw/undercooked meat
               Unwashed produce

Avoid dying or coloring your hair in the first trimester
CONDITIONAL!

Acne products should be avoided during pregnancy
CONDITIONAL!

All forms of tanning should be avoided during pregnancy
FACT!
               Beach and tanning beds not recommended
               No study to provide conclusive evidence

Saunas and hot tubs are not safe in pregnancy
FACT!

You are pregnant call in the maid because most cleaning products should not be used in pregnancy!
MYTH!  Unfortunately

Artificial sweeteners are not safe in pregnancy
CONDITIONAL!
