Tech Check: Google Glass

Posted: Updated:

Is Google Glass the future of computing?

In case you haven't heard the buzz about it, Google Glass is wearable technology that may just promise to take smart devices to the next level, but through all the buzz there is some controversy.

The device is still in the final development phase with it being released to app designers and beta testers. Southern Polytech graduate Morgan Willis is one of the Google Glass Explorers. That's the term the tech company gives to testers.

Willis took FOX 5's Doug Evans for test drive of the new device. France was the destination and the vehicle that got them there was an app called Field Trip. The app touts itself as a way to find hidden gems, history and insider tips from local publisher partners. The app is already available on Android and Apple devices.

Other apps in development for Glass are staid to include most social media and news outlets as well as some specialty apps, but that list will probably grow around the release date.

Some critics have pointed out privacy concerns over Glass having a wearable camera that sees and can record everything. United States Rep. Joe Barton of Texas raised concerns sending Google executives a letter of inquiry. Google responded stating they "have been thinking carefully about how we design Glass from its inception." Despite their reassurances, Barton remained skeptical calling their response "disappointing."

Despite the controversies, many tech savvy consumers are eager to see What Google's latest creation can do.
