Toddler dies after being shot with BB-gun

ATLANTA -

Atlanta police say an 18-month-old boy died Friday morning after being shot in the chest with a BB-gun, and his father is facing charges.

The incident happened about 9 a.m. at an apartment complex located in the 1000 block of Hank Aaron Drive in southeast Atlanta, police said.  Investigators say six people-- three adults and three children --were in the house when the gun went off.

One resident said he saw the child's father, Jesse Sellers, running out of the apartment yelling for help.  When the ambulance arrived, the witness said he saw the father wave the ambulance over and go back into the apartment with the paramedic.

The toddler, Jesstin Sellers, died about an hour after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Officers also recovered the BB-gun, referring to it as a rifle at the scene.  They say the child's mother was home at the time, and she was the one who called 911 for help.

On Friday afternoon, authorities announced that Jesse Sellers had been arrested and charged with second-degree cruelty to children and felony murder.  Sellers told authorities the shooting was accidental, and that he was playing with the gun when it went off.

Police said everyone is cooperating with their ongoing investigation. It will be up the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the child's exact cause of death.

On Friday night, family members and the community came together in a vigil to grieve.   Peoplestown community leaders are setting up a fund to help cover the child's funeral costs.

Sellers waived his first appearance before a Fulton County Magistrate judge on Saturday. He will remain in the Fulton County Jail. His next court date has not yet been scheduled.
