Metro red line service fully restored following overnight derailment

WASHINGTON -

Metro says full service has been restored on the red line following an overnight derailment.

Service was restored about 1:35 p.m. Friday.

No passengers were on board the train that derailed around midnight Thursday between the Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations. No one was injured.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says the derailed cars were returned to the track Friday morning and taken to different rail yards. Although the cause of the derailment is not known, Stessel says it does not appear to be related to track infrastructure or a specific type of rail car.

The cars that derailed were out of service and were being moved from one rail yard to another for maintenance. He says investigators are focusing on the equipment being used to move the cars.
