Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini: They Wanted Me To Have Peace

Posted: Updated:

"I made peace with it a long time ago," says boxer Ray Mancini about the fight on November 13, 1982 which changed his life and the lives of many others.

Mancini was 21 at the time.  His opponent was 23-year-old South Korean challenger Duk Koo Kim.  They fought at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.  It was, according to many observers, a fight filled with action, but Mancini had an easy time hitting Kim during the 14 rounds the fight lasted.

Then the shocking news: Kim suffered brain injuries which he died from four days later.  The week after his death, the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine showed Mancini and Kim battling, under the title "Tragedy in the Ring".

Now, in the documentary "The Good Son," Mancini and several of his friends and associates talk about the fight, and in the film's climax, Mancini meets the widow and son of the man whose life ended that night 30 years earlier.

"She said she wanted me to have peace," Mancini remembers from his meeting with Kim's widow.  "She wanted to release me of my pain." Kim's son told Mancini that for a very long time, he blamed Mancini for his father's death.  But no longer.

Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini joins Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A.
