Summer Is Drying Up: Weekly Drought Monitor

Posted: Updated:

It's been a long stretch of hot and humid days across Minnesota, and an even longer stretch without any measurable rainfall. In fact, the rainfall early Thursday morning was the first measurable rain we have seen since we saw 1.33" on the 6th of this month. That lack of rain combined with a string of 90 degree days, 6 of them this month alone, has taken a toll on our once improving drought situation.

The new drought monitor came out this Thursday August 29, 2013 and it has dramatically shifted from abnormally dry to a moderate drought for much of Minnesota. Below is a comparison of the drought situation as of today versus the drought conditions about 6 weeks ago.

We have only received 1.98" of rain so far this August; compare that to the monthly average of 3.52". According to climatological statistics, September usually brings in an average rainfall of 2.92". The dry weather is helping Minnesota farmers with the small grain harvest, but it's also hurting crop conditions. Some crops such as soybeans and oats are running slightly behind because of the dry conditions. Let's hope the Farmers' Almanac is correct with the above normal precipitation this winter, as we can use the snowfall to make up for lost time during this last dry spell.
