Penn Wood High School Football Equipment Stolen

YEADON, Pa. -

Seniors at Penn Wood High School waited all summer to get back on the football field, only to find out that most of their equipment was stolen.

"I finally got the chance and someone messes it up," says Jabri Smith, a senior.

Helmets, shoulder pads, coolers, an ice machine and even a generator are all gone. They were kept in the now-empty storage shed under the bleachers. The crooks cut open the padlocks to get in.

"Looks basically like another team took from us. They're not things a normal thief would take," says Rap Curry, the athletic director.

"My biggest anger is how can anyone steal from kids?" remarks Troy Brooks, the head football coach.

Coach Troy Brooks tells us that the equipment, valued at $10,000, has been kept in the shed since Penn Wood's Green Avenue campus building was closed after an arson last spring.

"For this to happen with your home opener four days away, this was a nice little blow," says Coach Crooks.

And if it couldn't get worse, the team of 45 can't even practice on the field because of all the rain.

But for now, Friday's home opener game is still on.

"The fire taught us how to be resourceful," says Rap Curry.

There's a rush order for new gear, but some of the underclassmen won't be able to play.

"They would have to relinquish their helmets so the older kids can play," says Coach Brooks.

And these seniors are grateful for what the school is doing to get ready for game day.

"They are standing by us real strong and supportive of the whole situation," says Jabri.

The coach tells FOX 29 that he's thankful that other schools in the area are reaching out and offering some of their equipment.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
