Local ladies playing kickball for a cause: breast cancer

We turn now to one of America's great past-times. No, not baseball. It's kickball. It's growing in popularity across America and right here in Georgia.

Good Day Atlanta caught up with one local league that's "having a ball;" but, their main goal is to promote cancer research and support cancer survivors. They call it "kicking for a cause."

At a game at Johnson Park in Rockdale County, there's the singing of the National Anthem. There's the team battle cry and, with the first pitch of the game, there's no mistaking that big red, rubber ball.

This is kickball for grown-ups.

"It brings us back to our childhood and it makes us feel good, and it's funny," said Carolyn Glover-Erves, the founder of American Association of Kickballers, or AAOK.

Carolyn founded the AAOK local league in 2012. This season there are six teams and a total of 150 players.

She says, "It's very competitive. They take it very seriously.

"It's just like going to a baseball game...they get upset, they get rowdy. It's the same thing, but it's just kickball."

These women are definitely here to win, but there's a greater mission to these games. Carolyn is a breast cancer survivor. She says she created the league as a way to raise money from cancer research and fellow cancer survivors with donations from the community and players.

She said, "We are kicking for a cause. Woo Hoo!"

The league presents gift certificates, cash and products to people fighting cancer.
