Gas Tank Away Getaways

Posted: Updated:

It's Labor Day Weekend, do you have the itch to get in the car and go?  Here are a few ideas from our Travel Expert Tracy O' Connor for pedal-to-the-metal mini-vacations.

BIG SUR & TREEBONES RESORT

WHY: Because Big Sur might just be the most beautiful place on earth.  Majestic coastline, the old growth forests, isolation in California?!  Ideal for those looking to unplug in Nature's majesty.

STAY: Treebones Resort of course!  THIS is the ultimate experience for travel enthusiasts looking for an experience, not just a fancy place to stay. There are 16 comfortable Yurts and most have ocean views and are perched atop the jagged landscape.  There is also a really cool human Nest hanging in the trees - how brilliant is that??

There is a fantastic sushi bar and restaurant on the property, that was just picked at the #1 restaurant on TripAdvisor.com.  Nice!

Even more, there's lots to do - golf, spa, art classes, cooking demos, it's perfect.  If only you could live there year round.

Or, just relax and unwind…

DEAL: Please Note:  Books up quickly, so need to plan in advance.  Yurts range from $170-$250.  The human nest about $100. Best deals are in January and February. A little cooler - but can see the whales migrating from your decks.

EXPLORE:  Julia Pfeiffer Burns park and hike the McWay Trail to the 80 foot waterfall that is the picture-perfect postcard of Big Sur.

Treebones will get you set up with Central Coast Outdoors, a great outfitter gets you kayaking, hiking or whathaveyou in this wonderland.

I LOVE Nepenthe Restaurant.  It is not to be missed.  Just a spectacular dining experience for the views alone & the history.  Go on a clear night.  Candlelit, otherworldly, family-run and one-of-a-kind.

LAKE TAHOE EXPERIENCE

WHY: Rated the #1 Lake in the US and the summer is… JUST getting started out there.

Get out and enjoy….the great outdoors, people!   September and October, known by locals as the "Indian Summer," breaks into full effect and outdoor activities, golf, lake fun, mountain biking are still in full force.   Some of the best weather all year…and smaller crowds.

Busy Labor Day Weekend…but the smoke should be clearing…

STAY: Basecamp Hotel of course!  It's handsome and hip is high on style, but super affordable.

There is a communal nature to the hotel, a rooftop hot-tub with mountain views and firepits to roast s'mores.

On property bar that serves local brews, hot cocoa and other delicious mouth-watering decadence.  Fun vibe for both couples and families. Walking distance to the beach, the lake, watersports - and close to the ski resorts.

DEAL: Rates start at $109 midweek and $169 weekend. Mid-week deals begin in the fall. Great winter packages coming up too!

EXPLORE: Tahoe Boat Rides!  Will get you It's a family run organization and they will take care of everything for you.  Take you and your family or friends out on the Boat.  They will Captain and drive it.  Take you to off the beaten track places.  They'll even give you a history and geography lesson to boot!  So much fun!  This is great for moms and dads that aren't experienced with watercraft, but want to give their kids the best in Lake-time activity.

Avide bike rider? Get some bikes and hit up the Flume Trail - arguable one of the most beautiful, adventurous and white-knuckle-crunching mountain bike trails in California.

Sample the Sierra Festival on September 1 - is a fun farm to fork food and wine fest happening for it's 3rd year in a row.  Good times to be had.

HOLLYWOOD & THE BOWL

WHY: Explore our own backyard. Hollywood.  There is so much going on for Labor Day Weekend and the end of the Summer season at the Bowl.  The Taste Food & Wine Festival put on by the LA Times - delish!  And fab, Tinsel-town themed shows at the Hollywood Bowl, including John Williams Hollywood Classic Scores.

STAY: The Redbury Hotel is a classic Hollywood Hotel, with true old-Hollywood glamour, style and class.  Top notch service.  An old-timey record player in every room.  "Flats" rather than traditional rooms.  In the center of Hollywood.  They have fun Hollywood Bowl and Taste of LA Packages.  Check 'em out! Redbury Promotions & Packages.

EXPLORE: The Hollywood Bowl for Labor Day Weekend thru the end of Bowl Season.
The Hollywood Bowl Calendar.

More info on The Taste of the Times.

Finally…

TRACY'S TRAVEL TIP:  Check out the smart phone Ap, Hotel Tonight app.  It's fab, people!  Gets you 20-40% discounts for departures on the dash.  And some chic hotels are participants.  It's for same day bookings.  Perfect for local and last minute - a Gas-Tank-Away-Getaways!
