West Nile warning in Suffolk County

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Suffolk County officials are warning residents and visitors to take precautions against mosquitoes after samples at some parks tested positive for West Nile virus.

The mosquito samples were taken at Byron Lake Park in Islip and Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore.

As a result, officials are recommending the parks stay closed between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Officials are also recommending that neighborhoods near these parks take precautions and stay indoors after dusk.

If you spend time outside, stay protected with insect repellent and long-sleeved clothing. Other tips for reducing exposure to mosquitoes include eliminating stagnant water by getting rid of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, and discarded tires and making sure roof gutters drain properly, flipping over wading pools and wheel barrows, and changing water in bird baths.
