MPSC:  Two Michigan Internet Service Providers Offer Internet Service to Low-Income Students and Families for about $10 a Month

August 28, 2013 – With the start of the school year just around the corner, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today noted that two Michigan Internet service providers offer Internet service to low-income students and families for approximately $10 per month.

"The Internet has proven to be a necessity for success at school," said MPSC Chairman John D. Quackenbush. "With the start of the school year upon us, parents should be aware that two Internet service providers in Michigan offer Internet service for approximately $10 per month and make computers available for approximately $150.  With prices like that, the digital divide is shrinking, making Internet service available to more and more Michigan families. These programs are helping to achieve Michigan's goal to increase broadband access, adoption and use."

Comcast and CenturyLink both offer programs that provide Internet service to low-income students and families, as well as computers at heavily discounted prices. In addition, free Internet training is provided.  Eligibility varies by company. Details on the programs (including additional charges that apply) are available on Connect Michigan's website:

The MPSC has a public-private partnership with Connect Michigan and Connected Nation to work with local governments, businesses, and citizens in the goal of increasing broadband access, adoption and use.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
