New Fashion Trends Could Mean Return Of The Mom Jean

Posted: Updated:

With fashion, everything old is new again. Could "the mom jean" be coming back?

Heard of the theory that hemlines rise with stock prices? The same might be true for waistlines.

Style experts say that low rises hit bottom, so to speak, a few years ago. Since then, things have been slowly inching back-up, as in, over the belly button.

Women's Health Magazine Senior Fashion Editor Thea Palad faults hipsters for starting this growing trend and celebrities like Taylor Swift and Beyonce for making it popular.

"I think the past few years we've been seeing waist bands get higher and higher," says Thea Palad.

But there is a down side to this high-style, the return of the dreaded "mom jean."

"I'll be honest it's not the most flattering trend on almost anybody," says Palad. "Camel toe is a real and present danger."

Distinctive for it's high rise and ample rear, the stand-out style hit its hey day in the 1990's, on shows like 90210.

A few brave celebrities like Jessica Simpson have already stepped out in them. It turns out that women seem far more open to the rising waist line than men.

"Would you ever wear mom jeans?" asks reporter Sharon Crowley.

"Maybe it depends. Yeah," says a woman on the street.

"I actually like it because I am a mom, and it covers up a little bit, I think. It's a little more modest than what girls are wearing these days. I like it a lot better… it's kind of old glamour," says another woman.

"Do you know what mom jeans are?" Sharon Crowley asks a man on the street.

"Mom jeans, as in just like baggy?" says a man. "I don't like those at all."
