EXCESSIVE HEAT: Minneapolis schools cancel after-school athletics

Posted: Updated:

Due to the sweltering heat forecasted for Monday, the Minneapolis Public School District is canceling all outdoor after-school athletics practices.

The district has been bracing for high temperatures topping the 90s, especially since 18 school buildings do not have air conditioning.

District officials are also asking students and parents to prepare for the heat with light-colored, light-weight and loose-fitting clothing. Schools plan to have extra bottles of water on hand, especially at the locations without air conditioning.

An excessive heat warning will remain in effect until midnight on Tuesday. The National Weather Service forecasts heat indexes between 100 and 110 in the afternoon hours.
