HEART HEALTH: LVAD day at the Fair

Posted: Updated:

University of Minnesota cardiac surgeon Ranjit John and heart patient Chris Lower discuss LVAD surgery, a potentially life-saving procedure for those with advanced heart failure.

On Thursday the U of M will be hosting LVAD day to educate fairgoers about heart health. LVAD stands for left ventricular assist device, which is an implant used in 3 ways:

If you've reached a stage of advanced heart failure where your heart is no longer able to pump enough blood to meet your body's needs, the implant can:

1. Be used in a patient awaiting a heart transplant

2. Be used in place of a heart transplant

3. Be used for temporary heart failure, allowing the ailing heart to rest and recover its strength
