Fox 11 Investigates: The Dangers of Marijuana Wax

Posted: Updated:

A lot of the pictures were too graphic and stomach turning to show on TV. Pictures of third degree burns of hands, and legs and backs and chests . The skin is bloody, literally falling off… all these from those who were caught in fires and explosions resulting from manufacturing a pure form of Marijuana nicknamed  "Wax''.

Producer Martin Burns and I have done two previous stories on this growing problem.  Marijuana is ‘'distilled'' using flammable and dangerous butane in order to get the active ingredient, THC , out of it in a pure, hardened form called  Wax or Honey Oil or Butter. It's similar to Hash, if you know about these things. Then you put a ‘dab' of the goop in a bong, smoke it and poof.. you're off to the races.. or whatever your destination may be. (Note, some medical marijuana dispensaries carry plenty of versions of Wax).  It's a quicker and stronger'' high'', supposedly.

The danger is in using the butane, the vapors can fill the room and ignite with just the smallest spark, from turning on a light to plugging in a coffee pot to lighting a cigarette. Dr. Peter Grossman, of the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital in the Valley,  saw our stories and realized he had to speak out. He and his colleagues at other hospitals have seen almost 20 burn patients as a result of Wax explosions in So Cal just since the beginning of the year.  He calls it an epidemic. His staff provided us with the pics and the video of a patient who's Wax related burns were being treated at the hospital.  (FYI The patient is anonymous you couldn't see his face and we didn't even know who it was). The Dr. just wanted to sound the alarm, that it's not worth risking your life, or ruining your life trying to recover from third degree burns just to get high or make a few bucks from selling  Wax.

Of course, like many things in life, especially with younger people, you don't think about the risk, just the so called ‘reward'. Kids cooking this stuff up in their bedrooms or their parents kitchens have to realize they're literally playing with fire.
