More than a dozen cats abandoned by their owner for weeks in a filthy apartment in Tempe have been rescued.

A neighbor took in 15 cats found near Hardy and 5th Street a few days before deputies were notified of the crime.

Deputies seized nine of the animals on Tuesday. They say the cats were left in the vacant apartment with no food or water. They were dehydrated and malnourished.

One cat was found dead in a kitchen drawer. Feces were all over the apartment.

Deputies found out who had last rented the unit and arrested Bradley Oliver on nine counts of animal cruelty. He admitted to abandoning the cats in the beginning of July.

The neighbor kept three cats -- the three others went to the Humane Society.
