Ron Livingston On 'The Conjuring', 'Drinking Buddies'

Posted: Updated:

Ron Livingston has had one heck of a summer. He struck box office gold in "The Conjuring" and now stars in another sleeper..."Drinking Buddies". Shooting the move scared him a lot more than "The Conjuring" did for one reason: it was all improvised. "all of it..the whole movie. He (director/writer Joe Swanberg) had to kinda framework where thinks the story's gonna go and he'll sorta give you little clues along the way but you're left to make up all the words yourself...it is a little bit terrifying."

Drinking Buddies revolves around two couples who aren't the prefect match...turns out they're attracted to the other's mates. Ron says it's messy and complicated just like real life.

"It's kinda like about that classic thing that your parents tell you...'how will I know when I meet the right person?' and they go 'you'll just know' and that's kinda a bunch of crap. I think the divorce rate would be a lot lower if that's how it actually worked.

Did Ron think "The Conjuring" would be as big as it was?

"Everytime I make a move I convince myself that it's going to be a huge hit and it doesn't always work out that way...it was a great cast and a great script...but you never know...I've never had an experience where you watch something you're in and it was really scary."

Maria also throws Ron a curveball, telling him she was a fan of the Dolly Parton comedy "Straight Talk". Ron explains how he was barely in it but that movie helped him get into the business.

Fun Facts About Ron Livingston:

  • His roles include disaffected corporate employee Peter Gibbons in the film Office Space, sardonic writer Jack Berger in a short-term relationship with Carrie Bradshaw in the TV show Sex and the City, and Captain Lewis Nixon in the miniseries Band of Brothers.
  • Livingston's first film role was in 1992, in Dolly Parton's Straight Talk.
  • He landed his first role in a major film in 1996's Swingers.
