Trestman reaches out to Ditka: 'Happenings at Halas'

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Marc Trestman is a smart football guy but he might understand people even better.

Proof of this came Tuesday when he invited Mike Ditka to watch the Chicago Bears practice, welcoming the Hall of Famer back to Halas Hall for the first time since he was fired back in December of 1992. Ditka very publically expressed his displeasure with the firing of Lovie Smith but there he was observing and evaluating as the Bears head into their preseason dress rehearsal against the Oakland Raiders.

The invitation came after Trestman and his wife, Cindy had dinner with Mike and his wife as well as George McCasky and his wife. But it's long overdue. Ditka is living Bears history, part of two Chicago championships. He's been there, won that and Trestman knows it.

The new head coach knows football inside and out, but as coach of the Bears - a charter franchise in the best sports city in the world - he better know the Bears in the same way. Bringing "Da Coach" back to where he belongs proves Trestman understands it.

Not to mention the message the new coach is sending to the team was echoed by the biggest football star the city has ever seen. Relationships formed with your teammates now are more important than money. Working together with respect for each other and the game - maybe even the fans - will ultimately lead to success.

Hearing it from the new guy in town and hearing from the guy who built this town are two different things. The players know that, Trestman knows that. They might hear what he says, but they'll listen to Ditka.

As Trestman continues to prove his offensive brilliance, he confirmed his understanding of Bears fans with his most brilliant move yet.
