Brother: School shooting suspect had troubled past

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Loved ones say that the man accused in a shooting at a DeKalb County elementary school on Tuesday has a troubled past.

Police say Michael Brandon Hill walked into Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy Elementary School armed with an AK-47 on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said he fired multiple gunshots at the school and walked in to the main office and sat down.

The terroristic act triggered an immediate evacuation of the estimated 800 students and 70 faculty and staff to the rear of the school.

Police say they eventually arrested Hill without incident. There were no injuries.

Timothy Hill said that his younger brother has struggled with emotional and mental problems for years.

"It's like something always clicked in him or something…and it just progressively got worse in his teenage year," Timothy Hill said.  "He has ADHD, ODD, bi-polar, if I remember correctly, some kind of schizophrenia."

Timothy Hill said that while his brother has talked about harming himself before, he's never talked about shooting at a school or anything like that.

Michael Brandon Hill does have history of disturbing behavior, Timothy said. He says his younger brother set the family's Stockbridge home on fire in 2009. Timothy and other relatives managed to escape unharmed.

Last December, Henry County police charged Brandon with making terroristic threats after a menacing remark left on Timothy's Facebook page where he threatened to shoot Timothy in the head.

"I felt like, honestly, he was good on that threat too," Timothy Hill said. "I felt like if he found where I was, he would probably do if he had the guns like he did yesterday."

Timothy Hill says he's not making any excuses for the crimes his brother is accused of committing, but does believe his brother never got the mental health treatment he needed to adequately function, despite numerous run-ins with the law and mental health diagnoses. He's hoping authorities will now take a closer look at his brother's mental health in light of this latest incident.

Brandon Hill is currently charged with possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of a firearm at a public gathering, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and acts and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Five of the charges are felonies, according to the DeKalb County Jail.
