Tony Hale: The Entire Show Is So Fun

Posted: Updated:

"Crazy good." That's how Tony Hale describes his experience working on the HBO comedy "Veep" and this year, he's gotten his first ever Emmy nomination. Hale told Steve and Maria how he feels about the nod.

"I'm still just waking up from the shock of it...it's way too overwhelming." He also gives credit where credit is due. "We have fun but it's the writing...those guys work incredibly hard, the writing is very dense."

Steve also asked Hale about the seemingly improvised style of "Veep".

"We have like 2 or 3 weeks of rehearsal before we shoot which allows us to improv and play and come up with stuff...we shoot and we definitely have a solid script but before that is the time that we play, it's just like a big actor's playground to come up with stuff."

Hale also talked about the show most people identify him with: Arrested Development.

"The fact that us coming back again, it was just incredibly surreal. Our ratings were never good but then as it kinda stopped the dvds got passed around...it's the kind of show you have to pay attention to."

The former Bluth also credits the fans for the show's comeback. "That's the only reason we got back was their excitement, their momentum, that's the only reason."

Hale and "Veep" fans will find out if he'll get that Emmy when the winners are announced September 22.

Fun Facts About Tony Hale:

  • He is often recognized for his role in the famous Volkswagen television commercial aired in 1999, in which he danced to the song "Mr. Roboto", which was later spoofed on Fox sitcom Arrested Development.
  • While in New York, Hale helped found The Haven, an artistically-minded community of Christians that meets weekly.
  • From 2003 to 2006, and returning to the role in 2013, Hale found success in television when he was cast as Byron "Buster" Bluth, the hapless, neurotic son with "mother issues" on Arrested Development. Hale also appeared in a season ten episode of MADtv in a parody of COPS, where two British robbers try to stop a domestic dispute among the Royal Family.
