Hazy Skies for Minnesota because of Western Wildfires

Posted: Updated:

As temperatures continue to climb and humidity levels return to more a more summerlike status, the hazy skies will return as well. Not only will this be caused by moisture levels increasing, which is what typically gives us that milky colored sky in the summer time, but also because of the raging fires in the Rockies. Southwesterly flow is kicking in across much of the region with air now transporting in from the western U.S. instead of southern and eastern Canada. With millions of acres of land burning in the western states, smoke has become a concern in many spots, and now will flow into our area over the next few days. Unhealthy air quality is not expected at the moment; however don't expect perfect air quality conditions either so if you are especially sensitive to a change in air mass, then you might just want to spend much of your time indoors this week. You may want to do that anyway because the air conditioning will feel pretty nice. Below is a look at the wildfires burning in the northern Rockies and the smoke that's pouring out of them and flowing through our area. Colors indicated the level of smoke in the air with the yellows, browns, and reds showing progressively more smoke. (The picture above is courtesy of CNN)
