NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster intentionally hit Alex Rodriguez with a pitch in the 2nd inning.

Dempster threw a 1-0 pitch that sailed behind the back of his legs moments before drilling Rodriguez with a 3-0 pitch up by his left shoulder.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi stormed out of the dugout screaming at home plate umpire Brian O'Nora, who after the plunking, warned both benches. Girardi was incensed that Dempster wasn't ejected by O'Nora as both benches emptied – including the bullpens out in right field.

Rodriguez, who took 1st base without saying or making any gestures, later scored the Yankees first run of the game on Eduardo Nunez's single.

Rodriguez faced Dempster again in the 3rd inning and grounded out to shortstop, driving in a run to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth inning, with the Yankees trailing 6-3, A-Rod homered off Dempster to deep center field. The three-time MVP clapped his hands as he stepped on home plate and pointed to sky.

The Yankees have rallied to take a lead 8-6 in the 8th inning Rodriguez is 2-3 with a HR.

The home run was Rodriguez's second since coming off the disabled list Aug. 5 and it left him 11 behind Willie Mays for fourth place on the career list.

Yankees starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia has yet to retaliate. If he were, he would be automatically ejected from the game since the umpire issued warnings.

Many players have spoken out against A-Rod, including Saturday's starting pitcher for the Red Sox John Lackey, but this is the first time an opposing player has gone after him.

It also comes a day after an escalating war of words between A-Rod's new lawyer Joe Tacopina and the Yankees.
