$8.5M awarded to mom of teen shot in back by officer

CHICAGO (AP) -- The city of Chicago may appeal a jury decision to award $8.5 million to the mother of an 18-year-old shot in the back and killed by a police officer.

Aaron Harrison's 2007 death focused scrutiny on allegations of police misconduct.

City Law Department spokesman Roderick Drew issued a statement Friday saying the city is "disappointed with the decision." He says an appeal is among the options being considered.

Jurors deadlocked at an initial trial. Jurors' decision at the retrial Thursday indicates they accepted Harrison was unarmed and someone planted a gun next to his body.

Officer John Fitzgerald contended he fired when Harrison pulled a gun. The Independent Police Review Authority found the shooting justified.

The plaintiff's lawyers say the jury's decision "vindicates" those who said Harrison was a victim.
