There will be no Running of the Bulls at Canterbury Park

SHAKOPEE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Canterbury Park will not host a Running of the Bulls-style event at the horse track in Shakopee, Minn., despite previous consideration.

This announcement comes after a promotional group for the Great Bull Run posted online that an event would be held at Canterbury Park on May 2014.

A few days after that announcement was made, a bull got loose at the Dakota County Fairgrounds and trampled visitors, sending one woman to the hospital. The bull was later put down.

About 500 people had already registered for the bull run at Canterbury, but the venue changed plans out of concerns that another bull escape could result in injuries, the Star Tribune reported.

The Great Bull Run event series is still set to take place in 10 cities across the United States, kicking off in Richmond, Va., on Aug. 24. The event mimics the prototypical week-long bull running event in Pamplona, Spain, which has drawn bull runners from across the globe for over a century.

The U.S. events will last just one day, and venues have coves and mountable fences in case participants need to escape or seek refuge from the perturbed animals.

Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke confirming cancellation reports via Twitter on Thursday, and responded to one user's comment who expressed her approval of the decision:

@MayorTabke: @rockinrollrenee I wasn't worried about the participants (they're big kids and can make choices) but a scenario exactly like Dakota Cnty
