Some Philly Students Returning For New School Year Today

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The first day of school could be delayed in the Philadelphia School District, but not for some charter school students.

They are starting today.

Seventy-five kindergartners woke up bright and early for their first day at Kipp Philadelphia Elementary Academy in North Philadelphia. It's one of 10 charter schools starting classes in August.

Kipp High School students have already begun their school year.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley was live in North Philadelphia at Kipp elementary awaiting students' arrival Thursday morning.

The district says the charter schools are opening earlier as part of a trend in education aimed at reversing what's called the "summer slide," when students start to lose skills over the summer.

But it comes as the district tries to avoid its own school opening slide back farther into September.

Parents and teachers continue to rally for the funding needed to make sure the rest of the city's schools open on time.

On Wednesday, Superintendent William Hite said he's planning to ask the School Reform Commission to suspend rules that require laid-off workers be rehired based on seniority.

He'll be at an emergency meeting Thursday.

The district has already laid of 3,800 employees, and needs $50 million to re-hire essential workers.

Protesters rallied outside of school headquarters Wednesday.
