Divisive Ordinance in Newport Beach

Posted: Updated:

In June about 100 people were protesting in a Newport Beach Neighborhood.  The pro-life activists were protesting outside of a home that belongs to a doctor who practices and supports abortions.

The issue was so heated it's a big part of the reason the city approved new ordinance that prohibits picketing within 300 feet of individual homes.

Activists are no happy about it in fact they plant to fight back, but people in this neighborhood say the ordinance makes them feel much safer.

"In this case it seems to me it'd be a blatant attempt to protect those who participate in some evil, whether it's this abortionist today or somebody else down the road.  Being able to expose neighbors as to who's living in their neighborhood, I think is well within the first amendment rights," said Jeff White, a pro-life activist.

"Oh, it's scary.  It's scary when you have that many people outside your house that's tantamount to a witch hunt," said Richard Agnew II, his father was the intended target of the protestors.

Richard to us the picketers wrote things like ‘neighborhood serial killer' on the sidewalk in front of his family's home.

But the group of activists says their picket was peaceful, and they plan to challenge ordinance by having another protest in that neighborhood again and ignoring the buffer zone to test how the city plans to enforce the new rule.

Though city council approved the city last night, it will not be officially adopted until the Sept. 10th meeting, then it will be another 30 days before it's in effect.
