Boy falls from Coney Island roller coaster

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A five-year-old boy is expected to recover from a serious leg injury after he fell from the Sea Serpent kiddie roller coaster on Coney Island.

The boy was at Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park at West 12th Street and the Boardwalk Wednesday evening when he fell, the FDNY said.

The boy suffered "multiple traumas" but was conscious, officials said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital on the East Side of Manhattan.

The boy, who did meet the height requirement, apparently crawled under the lap bar and tried to get off the ride before it had stopped, said Dennis Vourderis, vice president of the amusement park. He fell in between cars and onto the track.

"Our prayers for a speedy recovery are with the young man and his family," Vourderis said. He added that the boy suffered a large cut to his left leg.

The boy was on the ride with his 7-year-old sister, who was not hurt, Fox 5 reported.

Crews closed the ride and were inspecting the lap bar and the car the boy fell from, Vourderis said. The ride had been inspected and approved and hadn't had an incident in its 15-year history, he said.

"This is the People's Playground, a tradition, honor and responsibility our family has taken seriously for 3 generations and which we carry for future generations to enjoy," Vourderis said.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.

Mayor Bill de Blasio won't be reimbursing the city for personal travels that involve his security detail. "We have followed the conflict of interest board guidelines. I am following their guidelines to the letter," said de Blasio. The mayor has been heavily criticized for not paying the city back for travel expenses. Attention around the issue started last week when de Blasio was spotted not paying for a subway ride to Barclays Center while on official business.
