Slaughter of Staten Island's wild turkeys protested

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Thanksgiving is still three months away, but the days are numbered for some wild turkeys on Staten Island. USDA crews were seen loading up dozens of wild turkeys from the Midland Beach section to be taken to slaughter.

Apparently the South Beach Psychiatric Center asked the government to step in and clear the turkeys from the property.

For more than a decade the turkeys have roamed the grass, public streets and residential and commercial property in certain parts of Staten Island causing a nuisance for some. But for others -- including some protestors who demonstrated on Wednesday -- the wild turkeys are part of Staten Island and shouldn't be messed with. They say that slaughtering the turkeys is not the solution. They say the government should find a non-lethal method of controlling them.

The USDA has said the birds will be taken to a state-approved processing facility where the meat will be frozen and later tested to see if it safe for donation for human consumption, according to the Staten Island Advance newspaper.
