Minnesota not "Embarrassed" to be below freezing in August

Ah Snap! Well, a cold snap at least. On this Wednesday August 14, Embarrass Minnesota took a dive, temperature wise, and went below freezing. The low in that famous cold spot hit 31°. Not far from away was another cold spot, with Brismon bottoming out even farther, at 30°. Now let's head up close the Canadian border, where the border city of International Falls started at 35° this mid-August morning.

Here in Minnesota these late summer cool spells are nothing new, nevertheless they still make a mental impact on the minds of Minnesotans who are already checking their summer balance on a daily basis. There is no need to freak out and grab the winter apparel just yet. The month of August is usually the last full month of summer potential and it likes to try to leave its mark before its page gets turned for another year. Below is a graphic showing a typical August pattern with the Jetstream up north and a high out East, allowing heat and humidity to flow into the upper Midwest.

Funny, that set up will be what we can expect next week, as we start the Minnesota State Fair.
