ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WJBK) -

More than 700 special needs kids and adults took to the waters of Lake St. Clair Wednesday to try and reel in the big catch.

Participants boarded boats at Island Harbor Marina for 35th annual Handicapped Fishing Derby.

Kelvin Salis helped the create the event in the 70s when he took a friend's special needs child and classmates out on the water for the first time.

More than 200 volunteers were on hand to help participants shove off in more than 50 boats.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the disabled and handicapped people to get out on the water and have a fun day.  They look forward to this day all year long," said Ed Deeb, president of the Michigan Business and Professional Association.
