SUMMER 2013: Not Cooler but Warmer than Average So Far

If you can remember back to spring of this year your head will most likely be full of icy cold memories. We had snow on the ground through April and numerous days of cold and gray. Then came June and the rain never stopped. Good news for the drought, but not so good news for annual sun worshipers. July was no break from the chill either. In fact we set a record cold high temperature of 64° on the 27th. Also that weekend in July, several cities in the state of Minnesota set record low temperatures.

So, you would think that we are colder than normal and that we are well our way to one of the coolest summers in years, well not really. It's all about averages, and it only takes a few hot days to counteract all those gloomy and cool days. In July alone, we had several days with highs in the mid to low 90s.

Now, we still have the month of August to go before we can close the books on meteorological summer. So far, as of August 12, we are running almost 3 degrees below average on our mean temperatures. With just under three weeks to go, there are no major heat waves in sight. However, the Minnesota State Fair starts on August 22nd and as long time Minnesotans will tell you, it always seems to get blistering hot, at least for a few days.
