DETROIT (WJBK) -

An accused rapist was attacked in front of Giovanna's lounge at Vernor and 24th in southwest Detroit. We were told the beating was nothing short of brutal. Several people were involved, and a bat was used.

After he was attacked, he suffered another beating at 25th and Toledo. He was taken to the hospital and is now said to be hiding out.

Sources close to the alleged rape victim's family said Detroit Police almost botched the investigation. The incident is said to have happened in mid-July. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office would not file any charges without a rape kit. It took police nearly three weeks to send it to the crime lab.

The alleged rape suspect has also been evicted from his southwest Detroit apartment. There are remnants of the word "rapist" spray painted near his window.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig was not available for comment, but a spokesperson said the department is aware of the situation and is looking into it, including the attacks on the suspect.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab is processing the rape kit. Once it is complete, the prosecutor's office will decide if the man will face charges.

There are mixed feelings about the vigilante justice in the neighborhood.
