Wounded veteran says he was ticketed for service dog in North Wildwood

Posted: Updated:

A war veteran who has a service dog said a New Jersey cop gave him a ticket for taking a stroll on a boardwalk, according to reports.

Jared Goering said he and his wife were visiting the beach in North Wildwood last week and were headed to dinner when a police officer issued him a summons. Goering, who has served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, suffered a traumatic brain injury in a bomb blast. He said his dog, Navigator, helps him with mobility, especially when he walks up or down stairs.

"I respect cops, I respect that they do," he said. "I know they don't an easy job, but my job for 20 years was to defend the country. I got shot at on a daily basis and then blown up. You know, yeah, it hurts."

Goering said he showed the cop the dog's documentation but that the officer told him only "seeing-eye dogs" are allowed on the boardwalk.

The ticket has been dismissed, but a police official said that there is "more to the incident."
