3 ex-Ga. tax preparers sentenced in fraud scheme

Posted: Updated:

CORDELE, Ga. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say three ex-tax preparers have been sentenced to prison for filing fraudulent returns.

Authorities say Greene Wylie Sheppard, Sabrina Johnson-Lavant and Chandra Henderson ran a tax preparation service in Cordele, Ga. and were accused of fraudulently inflating clients' wages to earn certain tax credits.

Prosecutors say clients were sold other people's personal information that they could use if they wanted to claim additional dependents to maximize their refund.

Officials say the trio claimed more than $400,000 in fraudulent refunds in a 4-year time period.

The three were each charged with conspiracy and Sheppard was also charged with aggravated identity theft.

Sheppard was sentenced last month to more than four years in prison. Johnson-Lavant was sentenced to 18 months and Henderson was sentenced to 8 months on Thursday.
