Chicago's Most Wanted: Alexander Colon Ortiz

Posted: Updated:

Drugs are the major source of money for gangs, and a man who police say was caught red-handed is now on the run.

In November of 2011, Alexander Colon Ortiz was arrested by members of a Chicago Police and Drug Enforcement Agency task force as he was traveling inbound on the Eisenhower Expressway. At the time of the arrest, officers say they found 1,250 grams of heroin and more than two kilograms of marijuana.

A month after the arrest, Ortiz posted a cash bond -- and took off. After he failed to appear in court, a local arrest warrant was issued by the Cook County Circuit Court in January 2012, charging him with the manufacture or delivery of narcotics.

But investigators have been unable to find him, so on May 15, 2013 a federal warrant was issued charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

When Ortiz was arrested he provided Chicago police with an address in Philadelphia. Investigators believe that's where he may have been heading with the drugs. So he may be in that area, but he also may have returned to the Chicago area if he had a drug source here.

In addition the investigation has revealed that Ortiz has ties to Nebraska, New Jersey and Puerto Rico, so at this point there is a widespread search underway to try and locate him.

Here is the FBI's description of Alexander Colon Ortiz:

--White Hispanic male

--39 years old.

--About 5'5''

--205 pounds.

He is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him or know where he is, you are asked to call police or the FBI.
