Teen With Asperger's Seeks Funding To Compete In Special Pageant

WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. -

Kayla Baylor plans to make a splash at the Miss Amazing Pageant in Nebraska later this month and bring the national crown home to West Deptford, New Jersey.

"This is my dream," she says.

The fact that her dream may not become reality is heartbreaking to Kayla's mother.

"Being single and on disability, I work part time," explained Kayla's mother Joann Colaneri. "We have no other support for her to make this dream a reality. We have to have the help."

The Miss Amazing Pageant isn't just any pageant. It celebrates the abilities of women and girls like Kayla. The 13-year-old 8th grader has Asperger's. It's an autism spectrum disorder that causes social anxiety for Kayla. It's led to some tough times growing up.

"Sometimes I get bullied; sometimes I get left out," says Kayla.

Kayla plans to use the National Miss Amazing pageant to get her payback.

"I have to prove all the people wrong over the years," she says. "Prove I can do what other kids can do and I'm not as dumb or stupid as you think I am."

"It's not about glitz and glamour, its about confidence in the girls; building new friendships that she might not normally get," says Kayla's mother.

At the four-day pageant, Kayla will work on community service projects with other special needs children, as well as teaming up with mentors.

But her mom says Kayla's dream to bring the crown home to West Deptford won't come true without help. Over the past three months, she's only been able to raise $260 of the $3,000 they need to travel to the pageant at the end of this month.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
