BACK TO SCHOOL: Etiquette 101

Posted: Updated:

As new backpacks get stuffed with No. 2 pencils and notebooks, there is something else that parents need to send off with kids who are heading back to school -- good manners.

It's important to make sure kids treat each other, and their teachers, with respect -- so now is a good time to start instilling a little etiquette practice.

When county fairs start to crop up, the start of school is just around the corner. So, FOX 9's Rob Olson went to the Carver County Fairgrounds to talk about back-to-school manners.

An etiquette group called Marvelously Mannered Ladies e-mailed out a quiz with questions to answer, such as:

- What do I do if I forget names?
- What should I do if my locker is next to someone I don't like?
- What should I do if another kid shows up at school in the same outfit?
- What should I do if I hate the school lunch they serve?

The right answers are all about being nice, and wrong answers include:

- Say "hey buddy" instead of using a name
- Ignore them
- Going to the school nurse to say you're sick of everyone else
- Yell at the employees and say, 'I wouldn't feed this to my dog.'

A pair of teachers who also sell shaved ice out of a hut were also found at the fairground, and third-grade teacher Heidi Skerik said her students are often courteous in the classroom.

"We practice good manners and we expect the children to say 'thank you' and 'have a great day,'" Skerik said.

Older kids, however, could use some help.

"As a male teacher in fifth grade, I've never really had to restrain a kid until the last two years," Don Skerik told FOX 9 News. "Usually, if I say 'no,' they'll stop."

Ethan Formo, an athletic trainer at a high school, told FOX 9 News he sees bad manners every day.

"Disrespectfulness, foul language, things like that," he explained.
