Juicing, A Resurging Health Trend

PHILADELPHIA -

Jimmy Iovine has a thing for fruits and vegetables!

"A little piece of ginger; pop it in there," he says as his juicer blasts off.

And it's not because he sells them at Iovine Brothers, the well known produce market he co-owns at Reading Terminal Market. Thanks to some prodding from his nephew, Butch, they're helping him change his life!!!

Iovine is juicing, a practice that's been around for ages, but suddenly seeing a resurgence in popularity.

The 54-year-old Fishtown native, who now makes his own juice daily, says it's helped him shed a few pounds.

"I saw a movie....this documentary..." recalls Iovine. "'Fat, sick and Nearly Dead' and it kind of turned the light on."

Indeed, juicing may be the way to go, according to registered dietician, Emily Rubin, particularly if you're looking to jump start your desire to get healthy!

"If you want to juice in conjunction to eating a healthy, low fat diet, it's definitely the way to go!" says Rubin.

Rubin says it's also a good option if you suffer from certain medical problems. 26-year-old Dana Romeo has Ulcerative Colitis.

"The nutritionist explained to me that in juicing, it kind of loses the fiber," Romeo says. For some people with Ulcerative Colitis, high fiber worsens the symptoms.

"There is something positive that you do. You can actually take the fiber, the residue that's from the skins of the fruits and vegetables, and you can bake it," Rubin recommends.

Which is what Jimmy and members of his family do, when they're not making other juices.

Quality juicers can cost anywhere from $50.00 to $400.00. Some common Juicers include Jack Lalanne's "Power Juicer" and Jay Kordick's "Power Grind." Jimmy is using a Breville Juicer.

What Jimmy's nephew, Butch enjoys the most, is knowing that his uncle is no longer gambling with his life. Gradually, he's seeing his aches and pains disappear.

"I think it's quality and quantity of life that people are looking for," says Butch.

Both of which Jimmy Iovine says he's found, thanks to juicing.
