DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit Police Chief James Craig is making sure the community knows there may be a serial rapist prowling the streets of Detroit's west side.

"This sexual predator in my view has the makings of a serial sexual assault suspect," he said.

The first attack happened on Eaton Street near Meyers. A 22-year-old woman was discovered near a van beaten, sexually assaulted and set on fire.

Less than 24 hours later, another woman was discovered beaten and sexually assaulted on Elmira Street near Iris about a mile away from the first attack.

A third woman told Detroit Police that she escaped a similar attack not long ago.

A 21-year-old told us police have been going around the her neighborhood warning women to be on guard and stay off the streets. She is taking that warning seriously, and said police presence has been strong.

"As we get more information, it is our desire to quickly resolve this," Craig said.

At this point, police are working with two, very different descriptions. One is of a well-groomed black male in a black Infiniti. Another is of two white males in a pickup truck.

Evidence is being analyzed. Meanwhile, one of the victims is still in critical condition.
