Youth sports can teach children so much about teamwork, leadership, perseverance and overcoming obstacles, but sometimes kids also get injured. We got a doctor's advice on staying safe.

No surprise football is the sport that has the greatest number of injuries in a Safe Kids Worldwide study, and the knee is one of the most vulnerable body parts.

"Football players when they're sprinting down ten yards and going to go and pivot, the knee can sometimes come out of place," said Dr. James Bicos, an orthopedic surgeon with Beaumont Health System.

He is the doctor for the U.S. men's and women's Olympic gymnastic teams. He has seen many injuries with many youth sports.

It is important for parents and coaches to know if everyone follows some simple guidelines, you can prevent a lot of aches and pains.

"The first thing is not to increase their routines too quickly. Go for the ten percent rule. Don't go more than ten percent per week or you have a higher risk of injury. The second thing is make sure to warm up and cool down. Don't forget the cool down. That's extremely important," Bicos recommended. "Eat a nutritious diet. Stay away from caffeinated beverages, and the other thing is get rest because your body needs rest to recover."

Let's reiterate one point. For athletes of any age at any skill level, Bicos said you cannot get away with skipping the warm up or the cool down. Those are critical to your body.

"Warming up brings blood flow to the muscles, and it actually activates your nervous system, so it kind of gets your body ready for the sporting activity, which is important. Cool down just as important because it helps to get rid of the swelling, helps to lengthen some of the muscles, and a lot of the times you can use it for a mental cool down and to review what you did," Bicos explained.

Safe Kids Worldwide does offer up some really good resources on its website -- www.safekids.org -- when it comes to keeping children of all ages safe.
