STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Summer is over for more than a thousand students in Warren Consolidated Schools. The district's year-round school program is officially underway, and class is back in session.

"This kids are ready to come back by August. They're just bored. You can only play outside for so long before you miss your school friends," said parent Rebecca Najor-Williams.

The program nearly cuts the summer break in half, but maintains the number of days students are in school. It involves three elementary schools -- Holden, Siersma and Fillmore.

"I was at all three schools this morning, and the kids are more than ready to come back to school," said Superintendent Dr. Robert Livernois.

He said in traditional schedules, teachers spend weeks teaching students what they learned the year before. That's because students experience the summer brain drain.

"It can be very problematic for a lot of kids, especially given some of them face an eleven or twelve week break during the summer," Livernois said.

"I think that they'll be able to learn and expand a lot quicker than they would in the traditional setting," Najor-Williams said.

The new schedule will also give students an extra two weeks off during fall and spring breaks.

The district allows parents that opt-out of the year-round program to send their children to neighboring schools.

Right now, there are no plans to expand the new schedule to the district's twelve other elementary schools.
