SAYLORSBURG, Pa. -

Three people are dead and three others are injured after a gunman opened fire inside a town hall meeting in Monroe County.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday in Saylorsburg, which is located about 85 miles north of Philadelphia, just north of the Lehigh Valley.

Pennsylvania State Police say 59-year-old Rockne Newell is the suspect who began shooting into the windows of the Ross Township Building and through the walls.

They say Newell blasted his way into the supervisors' meeting room, which was filled with more than a dozen people, and continued firing.

He killed three people inside before he was tackled by a township official.

"He began shooting the township building up on the outside," state police Lt. Robert Bartal said. "He shot out some windows of it. He then moved on, advanced onto the building. He entered the building, shot some individuals inside the building."

Bartal continued, "He then retreated out of the building, went to his car. He secured a handgun, and he made his way back into the building, at which point two, possibly three individuals wrestled him to the ground. At some point during that confrontation, he ended up being shot in the leg, and he was held until the troopers arrived."

The rental car the Newell used was registered in the state of Texas, authorities said.

State police tell FOX 29 News that Newell had a long running feud with township officials over his property, which was condemned.

SkyFOX flew over Newell's property Tuesday morning.

A newspaper reporter with the Pocono Record who was there covering the meeting Monday night wrote that it sounded like a string of firecrackers.

He says smoke and plaster was all he saw when the walls blew out from the gunshots. If you can imagine what you would do, the reporter said everyone hit the floor and hid behind tables. He managed to crawl out of a side door.
