NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Six-year-old Amer Khan drowned Saturday in a retention pond near his home on the southwest side of Naperville.

At approximately 11:39 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was made reporting a small child face down in the pond at 95th Street and Cedar Glade.

A Naperville Fire Department water rescue team was sent to the scene, along with a number of police officers.

The first police officer arrived on the scene in two minutes and took over CPR from the caller, who had removed the child from the water.

The first paramedics arrived two minutes later and took over, moved the patient to an ambulance and continued treatment as the boy was transported to Edward Hospital.

The boy was pronounced dead at 12:28 p.m. at the hospital.

The investigation into the boy's death is continuing, and an autopsy is planned for Sunday, according to the DuPage County Coroner's Office.

Nicole Kovach said she was just arriving at her home in the Glenmuir apartment complex on Naperville's southwest side when a score of Naperville emergency vehicles came to her neighborhood.

"We had just gotten home, but when we got here, everyone was starting to pull up," she said as she walked her dogs with a friend near Kilburne and Rockport lanes near the pond. "We were literally right there."

Kovach said 10 fire trucks and five ambulances were arriving at the pond near the intersection at about 11:40 a.m.

"They all got into their water suits, but they had already pulled him out," Kovach said. "They were just putting the body in the ambulance."

Kovach said the tragedy was a shock.

"I see him all the time," she said of the boy. "It was horrible."
