The Talker: Deputies raid Wis. animal shelter, kill baby deer

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Every year in Wisconsin, more than 200,000 deer are hunted and killed, but the death of one deer in particular has many people outraged.

A family from Illinois had recently brought "Giggles" the fawn to the Saint Francis Animal Shelter in Bristol, Wisconsin, but because Kenosha County is an area where animals have come down with "chronic wasting disease," it's against the law to harbor a wild deer.

So, the shelter had a deer and state officials weren't happy.

You might think a few phone calls or a warning could solve this one, but that's not what happened. The Department of Natural Resources got a search warrant, raided the shelter, and killed the fawn.

Shelter President Cindy Schultz told the Kenosha news: "I've never seen anything like it, and it was all over finding a baby deer. Instead of letting us explain where she was going, they sent in an army and killed her."

On Facebook, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has a different spin. They say, "Last week, our warden staff had the difficult and emotional job of removing a fawn that was illegally taken out of the wild and into captivity. None of our staff take joy in these situations. In the end, we are charged by the citizens of Wisconsin to carry out state laws mandated by the legislature. It is a responsibility we take very seriously. We don't have the ability to pick and choose which laws to enforce."
