Families press Christie on medical marijuana for kids bill

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Vivian Wilson, 2, has been diagnosed with a severe and potentially deadly form of epilepsy. Doctors say Vivian suffers from Dravet syndrome, which causes daily seizures.

Meghan and her husband Brian say that seven drugs don't work. They say the only thing that seems to help their daughter when she suffers a seizure is medical marijuana

Vivian's father has collected more than 2,000 letters from around the country showing support for the practice of medical marijuana -- no matter the age. The Wilsons along with other families delivered the letters to the office of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Senate Bill 2842 sits on his desk. If he signs it into law, the legislation would make it easier for minors to participate in New Jersey's medical marijuana program. Currently it would take recommendations from three doctors in order for a minor to participate. The proposed law would bring the number to one.

The second part of the legislation would allow parents to get an edible strain of cannabis that will not get children high.

When asked about the legislation, Christie said he was examining it and would make a decision soon.

"I am hoping to come up with a solution that will be helpful to these families but also helpful to all families in New Jersey so that we don't become Colorado or California," he said.

Under a plan being considered in Trenton, Belmar would be prevented from charging people $7 for beach badges because it accepted money from the federal government to replenish Belmar Beach and rebuild the boardwalk. The plan is raising concern because the badge fees help to pay for cleaning, lifeguards and police at the beach, according to News12.
