ATLANTA -

This summer's rains have been great for filling our lakes and keeping the grass green, but they've also caused problems for some Atlanta-area homeowners.  So how can you keep accumulating rainfall from seeping into or even swamping your home's basement and crawl spaces?

AquaGuard Basement Systems' Tom DiGregorio says a number of inexpensive measures can help protect your house from leaks and moisture.  One of those is using downspout extensions to channel rainwater away from your foundation.

Clogged gutters need to be cleared. Tom says to watch out when gardening near your house.

In another local home that called for a more specialized approach, Aquaguard installed their Waterguard system.

"Any water that now comes into the basement is going to go into our system, and this system goes all the way around the perimeter," DiGregorio explained.

Once in place, the system is covered with cement. It then diverts the water to a pump that forces it away from the house.

DiGregorio says most underground basements and crawl spaces need extra help to stay dry.

"The bottom line is in many cases, it's a great idea and necessary to have a dehumidification system in your basement," he added.

The costs of systems vary with square footage, and DiGregorio says his company will visit potential customers for estimates.  He says it's important to remember that uncontrolled moisture can lead to mold, which is expensive to have cleaned.  He also says dirt crawl spaces are a bit different, and recommends sealing them almost entirely.
