Shaq & Mom Lucille: Go To The Boys & Girls Club

Posted: Updated:

Shaquille O'Neal's teammate on his latest venture is his mother, Lucille.  They're trying to spread the word that it's time for parents to get excited about their kids' education.

And the team they're playing for is the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.  The organization's campaign to reinforce the importance of education is "The Wake-Up Call."

Many years ago -- decades, even -- before he was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaq was a member of his local Boys & Girls Club.  He tells Tony McEwing and Maria Sansone that he grew up in a rough neighborhood and that his parents' instructions to him were to go immediately from school to the Boys & Girls Club and wait for one of them to pick him up.

It was a safe haven for him and for thousands of young people both before and after him.

Fun Facts About Shaquille O'Neal:

  • He was one of the heaviest players ever to play in the NBA. Throughout his 19-year career, O'Neal used his size and strength to overpower opponents for points and rebounds.
  • In addition to his basketball career, O'Neal has released four rap albums, with his first, Shaq Diesel, going platinum. He has appeared in numerous films and has starred in his own reality shows, Shaq's Big Challenge and Shaq Vs.
  • O'Neal credits the Boys and Girls Club of America in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, with giving him a safe place to play and keeping him off the streets. "It gave me something to do," he said. "I'd just go there to shoot. I didn't even play on a team."
  • O'Neal left LSU for the NBA after three years. However, he promised his mother he would eventually return to his studies and complete his bachelor's degree. He fulfilled that promise in 2000, earning his bachelor of arts in general studies.
